Does anyone know which make/model of radio was put in the Mk3? I know they were an optional extra but I can’t find what radios were available.
Thanks!

According to the sales brochure I have they seem to be implying it would be an HMV radio but no model quoted I'm afraid. I tried to upload a copy of it but, as usual, the file is too large to attach. This site really does need an overhaul.

i agree, it would be marvellous if more people put their head above the parapet & helped out, alas folk do not want to & that"s the way it is. so a handful of folk end up doing everything

Hi Emma,
The radios that were used were to the DIN 1 standard, as are all radios. The DIN standard defines the size of the radio, height and width. Today there are DIN 2 ones, with video screens, available. The 1 or 2 refers to the height, DIN 2 is twice the height of a DIN 1. What is your aim? To be period correct or just to have a radio? Search eBay, there are lots of units and some even have a retro look. One point is the all modern radios are NEGATIVE ground, so your car may need to be converted.

Herb i never knew that, all radios now are negative earth, i wonder when the switch was for majority of cars from positive earth to negative was, or was it when everyone jumped from alternators to dynamos ?

Herb Thanks Herb, Emma's husband here.
We are switching the car to negative earth, but were trying to work out if the radio already fitted is original, in which case it would be worth converting the radio it to negative earth and retaining it, or not in which case we will replace with a period one already converted.
I'll see if I can upload a picture of it later.

Hi Hallam,
Back in the day radios came with polarity switches, because the car fleet had both dynamos and pos earth and alternators, neg earth. Check your radio for this switch.

Hi Herb,
Sorry - 11 month old baby has rather taken up time recently so no progress as yet!!
I'll update once we've managed to have a good look. Thanks for your help so far.

I understand, the ~60 year old baby has to take a back seat for the latest arrival. Before you know it you'll be bouncing another baby on your knee, your grandchild.

With apologies for letting this one go dormant, here is the Motorola unit we have fitted currently Any ideas if it might be original (or at least a period option)? Kr Hallam

Hi Hallam,
Nice looking radio, and I love the burled dash.
Looking closely at the radio I see it has a long wave button. If it is a transistor radio then I would date it as mid to late 60s. Earlier ones were hybrid, a mixture of transistor and valve. Certain transistors were very expensive in those days. If it is an all transistor one then I would expect the polarity switch to be there.
