I know that the rev counter was an option on the later dash version of the 2.5 litre RM's. The take-off is a right-angled drive from the back of the camshaft. It is hard to reach between the back of the engine and the bulkhead. I have heard of RMA/RME's with a rev counter and I think it was also an option, but rarely fitted. I assume it would also be driven from the (inlet?) camshaft. Rob

There are the mortal remains of a 1 1/2 on flea-bay at the moment, situated in Scotland. The car was damaged in a smash and has been 'dismantled'for spares. This car sported a rev counter dashboard which has been repurposed by an RRMC member. Unfortunately the engine had already been removed from the car, with help from a gas axe, prior to the RRMC member getting to it, so one person has the rev counter, someone else has the drive. I suspect the drive cable was probably gas axed too. Vandalism.
I believe that the necessary right angled drive is not too difficult to find, shared with the Pathfinder, at least. What is somewhat rare is the rev counter.

Strange to say, there is a rev counter on flea-bay at the moment, item no. 264638272523 which looks suspiciously like a Riley option rev counter. Only drawback, apart from the price, is the presence of a clock at the bottom, as per the RM speedo. Whether one could put up with two clocks; GMT and BST perhaps?

The rev counter replaces the clock on the dashboard, so the small clock in the instrument will be appropriate. Of course, it will be a real bonus if the clock actually works.

This, of course, can only be true of the later cars which had the large clock matching the speedo. The rev counter on offer was the earlier style which would have stood out like a spare bit alongside a later speedo. I have heard, I think, that some early cars were equiped with a rev counter, this would have meant an entirely new dashboard layout.
I think the later style instruments were shared with the Austin Atlantic?
