Am rebuilding the engine for my brother's 1935 Riley Lynx, which he restored in the UK while serving in the US Air Force during the late 60's. The car sat for years in Sacramento, California while he raised a family, and it became a storage bin. He now has Parkinson's disease. His oldest son decided to get it running again, and I, having restored many US cars and wanting to help, took on the job of supervising the mechanical work on the rear end, trans, etc. I am now ready to reassemble the engine after doing the necessary machine work, and getting new pistons and rings. My question for you is this: What were the original colors of the engine and all its associated parts, ie. valve covers, oil pan, timing cover, etc? After some cleaning, it would appear the block was sort of a battleship grey color. Any help out there? Thanks, John Wells jmwells@cavmachine.com.

Hi John,
Just read your query re engine colours.Is it a Nine (4cylinder 1100 ccs), 12/4 (4cylinders 1.5 l) or possibly a 6 cylinder engine?
I think the CI bits like the block and head were satin black. This from memory looking at unrestored Rileys over the years.

Rocker covers, sump(oil pan?), Timing cover and the other aluminium bits were natural smooth finish, except rocker covers were polished. Same will apply to gearbox and clutch cover. Aluminium is aluminium, cast or steel is black.
