I have two gearboxes at the moment for my early series 1, 1.5, obviously the one attached to the engine (out for a rebuild presently) and one that came from my brother who has had a few 1.5's over the years. Im trying to decide which is the best one to use and the box from my brother certainly has better less worn synchros etc and generally looks a better condition internally with less play in the shafts. There is one difference I notice that his box has 21 (if I counted them right) fine splines on the input shaft) and mine has 11 much thicker broader splines.
I was just wondering if there were different boxes used across the marks of car? if so where there other differences internally. The origins of my second box, apart from coming from my brothers collection of spares is not clear so I also wondered if it was an MGA or Magnet box which I always assumed were the same. Certainly the outside of the two boxes appear identical.
Anyone know a little about this before I commit to fitting

Hi Casper
The box with the larger number of splines is the later box with tougher syncros but check the side plate has it got a filler plug on that side? If it has it is correct for you vehicle if however it has a dipstick then it is not suitable as, a the dipstick can't be accessed unless you cut a hole in the floor and, b the clutch slave cylinder mounting could be in the wrong place altogether. The later box uses a different crossmember and associated stabiliser bar and rubbers plus the speedo driven gears are different (they are the same as the MGB) so you may find one that matches your speedo head if memory serves me right I think there are 28,29 and 30 tooth driven gears. You will also need a clutch plate to match the fine spline first motion shaft the pressure plate is the same for both.
Hope this is of some help NP

Thanks for that it was a big help. Looks like I have the right box I also have the correct clutch and mountings. If the cross member is different that is the only part I might need to source.
That makes sense about the stronger synchros the ones in the original box are very worn the ones in the later box look hardly touched

Hi again
The newer crossmember is different as the stabiliser bar connects directly to it unlike the early bar which connects to a bracket on the side of gearbox. Please note although the newer box is stronger and can take some abuse even the latest of them is 54 years old so check the bearings for roughness by rotating the first motion shaft and the tail shaft by hand to feel for roughness take the side cover off after draining the old oil out and check for debris in the box and in the oil indicating bearing or syncro breakdown depending if the debris is ferrous or not.
Hope this is of some help? NP

Synchro on 2nd on my MK 1 had gone (when doesn’t it) and a replacement that I bought on eBay for £30 off a former 1.5 owner (Doug Lockyer aka motorway drifter) has been fitted but not yet tested. For various reasons I’ll not know if it’s any better, the same or any worse until October. I’m betting that coming from Doug it can only be the same or better. It’s a gamble but for just £30 it was a gamble worth taking. Fingers crossed.

I am glad you have found a cost effective solution and hope all will be well when you test it. NP
