How were these bulbs Bruce? Hello Jonathan, These bulbs fit 'plug n play' to my car and perform as described on the packaging. I haven't got out an about in full darkness much, too much light pollution in suburbia, but these are certainly an improvement versus the OE bulb/reflector. I should snap a photo one day/night showing the pattern to share with you lot. The pattern/flood is pretty much same as shown on the web site. I also have a Lucas™ LR9 spot to look a little further down the road when I need to. B

I have been working on improving the lighting on my car with a view to improved vision at night and having the option to use dipped headlights in daytime to improve my visibility. This also allows use of the dip switch to flash other drivers rather than fumbling with the light switch. I originally planned just to fit LED bulbs which, because I have tripod headlamps, is still a work in progress. However, the LED headlamp bulbs, I have tried, take about 55% of the original filament BPF bulbs on my car.So I decided to fit headlamp relays to minimise the current in the headlamp switch and dip switch. I used the relay kit from the MGOC sold for MGB and Midgets. It was easy to fit and the connectors and colour codes are the same as on our cars. I will report back if/when I have proved a suitable LED bulb for my BPF tripod lamps.

Jonathan, Good job for the relays install, one for each beam is a plus and will reduce heat at the lighting switch. I design/build/sell MGB specific relay kits, (headlamps, driving lamps, heater motor blower etc.) for the MG community. I also built a kit for the Riley. Fused and 'comtemporary' cloth wiring makes the install almost invisible, of course having a Black colour engine bay helps. The Lucas™ Tripod lens doesn't lend itself to LED emitters. The function of the Tripod center reflector is to throw light back to the main reflector surface of the globe. THe LED emmitter is not built the same as the BFS incandesceant bulb. Salut Bruce

Vintage and classic spares list two LED bulbs that they claim are suitable for Tripod lamps and I have discussed it with them by phone. I have tried one type but the LEDs were further forward than the filaments on the standard bulb and a central dim area was present in the beam pattern. I am currently waiting for them to deliver the other type which appear to have the LEDs further back, so we shall see.

Jonathan, Bravo, yes due diligence is needed. Most LED emitters align with H4 bulbs so if one has a convex H4 globe reflector/lens assembly there is a pretty good chance the beam/pattern will be similar . I show below the Classic Car LED emmitter versus the H4 type. Either of these will produce a same light pattern installed in the reflector/lens. Although I really like the vintage look, I think the Tripod design center reflector is the villain . Bruce

For anyone with tripod lamps with BPF bulbs I found the best option was these www.classicbulbs.co.uk/products/p36dled-s30-warm_white_premium_12_24v_led_headlamp_-bpf_dc_p36d_base-p36dled-s30I tried a different bulb as mentioned earlier but the beam pattern had a hole in the middle. These, from the link above, turned out to be OK as the LEDs were the same distance forward of the mounting flange as the filaments in the original incandescent bulb so they focused correctly with the original reflector. The first bulbs I tried had the LEDs much further forward so didn't focus correctly. This information is only relevant to Tripod lamps and as mentioned earlier by Bruce there are better options for non tripod lamps. Interestingly when I contacted Classicbulbs by phone to let them know, that in my opinion, the first set of bulbs was unsuitable for tripod lamps, in spite of their claim on their website, the guy said "thanks that is really useful information". He changed their website while I was on the phone! Makes you wonder who tested them in Tripod lamps before claiming they were suitable and also why the LEDs were too far forward to focus in BPF "British Pre-Focus"lamps

Jonathan, Well done you 👍 I do try to help out vendors as you do, often fruitless but we shouldn't give up. Thankfully the greasey bits for our cars are well known and usually fit, in form and function. When we get into the unknown, we need to pay attention and ask many questions. Keep well Bruce
