The original tyre size was 560x14 and I'm just wondering what size radial tyres fellow 1.5 owners use, whether tubeless or tubed tyres are fitted etc. etc. Also, what brands.
I know it's not just about using a 14inch tyre but also the rim width has to be taken into account.
My car has, I think 165x14 tyres fitted, (she's a 40 minute walk away in the lock-up at the moment) and they look like a set of over-inflated treaded tubes. OK I'm exaggerating but they somehow don't look right and she hasn't a lot of grip on anything but the driest of surfaces. As we're coming into the winter, I might just see whether it's worth changing these over to something a little more appropriate. The current tyres have been on there for a few years and thankfully there's been no problems at MOT time.

Mable must have wheel spacers fitted because the std rims fitted with a radial tyre bigger than 155x80x14 rub the sidewall of the tyre on the track rod.

You guys are daredevils. Let's not forget that the Riley steel road wheel is only 3" wide.
The tires referenced in this post are for fitment to much wider road wheels, in Roger case 4.5"-6" wheel. Yikes!! I suspect there must be some serious side wall flexing going on, no? Firestone brand offer a tire the F560 that is recommended to fit at minimum a 4" wide rim. I have seen these tires fitted to a Riley and the car is driven quite aggressively with no un toward grief.
Graham knows I like to spend other peoples money, and I may suggest that the only real solution is to change out the road wheels.

These wheels (link) are made to fit the Mo**is Manure van and are 4.4" wide making the fitment of a modern tire size much easier. I am told no spacer required so no fear of the standard Riley wheel studs failing. I am currently riding on 5/20-14 bias ply tires that are deadly to say the least and am in the process of searching an alternative so I look forward to more input here. Salut Canuck

Bruce 5/20 x 14? If you want to persist with cross ply tyres (as we call them on this side of the pond) you could go up to 5/60 x14. Just found this statement on the Wolseley Owners Club page "In April 1959 the tyre size was increased from 5.00 x 14 to 5.60 x 14".
A quick bit of googling seems to indicate that 145 x 14 would seem to be a direct radial replacement for 5/20 x 14 cross ply. I'm quite close to the Charles Ware Morris Minor Centre in Bristol so may pop in there to see what the MMs that they have there are running on.
Bruce, it's true you do have a penchant for spending other people's money but if I could just find a decent tyre for the standard wheels that we have I'd be more than happy. Have spent way too much on Mabel in the past year or so already........but then again that was mostly because of my stupidity.

Graham, I agree, I have no desire to replace cross ply with more cross ply so radials are in the works. The missing piece of the puzzle is the road wheel. FWIW the choice of 14" diameter tires is becoming increasingly slim. I scrounged about to find a suitable 14" diameter 'performance' tire for my MGB. As we know 'new' cars are fitted with 16" ++++ diameter wheels. I think you are spot on with the 145x14 tire and I suspect you will find this size tire in abundance at Mr. Wares place. As to the 'stupidity' comment I thought this was a mandatory attribute for Riley ownership.

Bruce, my own individual bout of stupidity was when I decided to introduce Mabel to the depths of ditch by the side of the road in France last year. I actually think that owning a 1.5 is a very sensible option........there's many other cars out there which are less so.

Have you tried standing a CROSSPLY 5.60x14 next to a radial 155x80x14 wheel (the popular choice if you want to aviod spacers)theres a big differance in height, which will effect the gearing. The 165x14 radial comes between the two.

The 165x14 radial comes between the two. Mr. Cooper & Mr. Rolf, I am not discounting the height of the individual tires nor the consequent gearing/speedometer reading corrections etc. The size calculator that Rolf posted addressed just this as does your statement. Rather I am more concerned about the tire fitting the rim width. The tire 'section' is dramatically different, and I question the integrity when installed on a 3" wide rim, hence my statement; "some serious side wall flexing going on" .

The Morris Minor centre supplied me with some 4.5"wide wheels i fitted 165x14 vredestein tyres but cannot report on tyre performance as i am still restoring my Riley but the 165 tyre fits better on the wider rims hope this helps.
