Hi I have 155x14 tyres on standard rims and the spare fits ok although it is tight it will go in the compartment ok and the clamp is ok too. Hope that helps NP

The 165s I'm currently running will not fit in the spare tyre well unless seriously deflated and then only with a kick and a shove and as for getting it out, well it's a job for a crowbar or tyre lever.

Graham, Nigel has provided the correct info. The 155 tire size will fit the standard rim, at its limit, but I know of one Riley and some MM that sport this tire size with no issues. The only tire available over here in that size is the Firestone F560.

I purchased 155 14 Nankang Tyres(Indonesian I think) £34inc vat plus valve and balance which are available from most suppliers even Longstone tyres keep them and they are vintage tyre specialists of some repute but they are definitely not the cheapest route as they retail at £55.20 inc vat. You should be able to get them for around £37 inc vat plus valve balance for four. Hope this helps NP

As I mentioned earlier on in this thread I really think the true answer to this dilemma is a wider road wheel.
I have been chasing ESM for quite a while, they offer a 4.5" wide MM wheel

that is pretty much what our Riley needs. These wheels are manufactured in Asia, of course, however I am assured by the boss of ESM (he has visited the factory himself) that these are top quality wheels. There is a ship sailing towards Blighty right now with a shipment of these wheels.

Follow up on wheels,
I received my new wheels from ESM for George. These are nice at first perusal, and measure up fine.
I just completed the painting from OEW to Silver as they should be. Just so Simon can feel better, I thought I best post a photo of the wheel painted.
Next week, with time allowing I will install the new tires. I admit I am quite looking forward to driving on radials as George has always been sporting cross plies!

Old thread revival time. I need to get some new tyres and it looks like getting new wheels as well is the way to go. I currently have two Nankang 155/80-14 which are about four years old, two Firestone S-211 which are probably at least thirty years old and badly cracked, and a Dunlop D75 5.60 cross ply spare which is probably nearly as old as the car. My thoughts are that I will get four Morris minor van 4 1/2 inch wheels with either 155 or 165 tyres and keep an original 3 inch wheel for use as an emergency spare. It looks as though the moggy van wheels from ESM are the best option. I see from this thread that Bruce went that route and hopefully will comment on how they are as a replacement. I haven’t decided which tyres to get yet, the Nankangs do the job and are cheap but are not the best looking. Grateful for any comments from anyone who has done this or has any other ideas.

Hi Gordon, Yes, go with the 4.5J rims and keep the 3" for spare. You can just squeeze a 155 tyre on the 3" and still get it in the boot slot, or keep a good crossply (it can't be worse than a 'spacersaver' on a modern car).
In the last couple of years we have lost two more nice tyres - Firestone 155/80 and Vredestein 165/80 14s. The available selection now is depressing.
Even the thousands of MGB owners out there have a lousy selection of 14" tyres to choose from.
Interestingly, the chaps at Longstone push 145s or 155s for Riley 1.5 and Wolseley 1500. These are the same tyres (for of course original 3" rims) as the Morris Minor on which they are perfectly satisfactory. Bear in mind the Minor weighs 100 kg less and has just less than half the braking area of the Riley (I've measured the drums. The 7" Minor front drums are also half the weight of the 9" Riley ones). I don't think it is rocket science to suggest that with twice the brakes, the Riley is irresponsibly 'undertyred' on 145s and probably 155s. Even my 1098 Minor van with the in-between 8" brake drums can lock up 165s in the dry
These days when I look at images of the cars on original 3" rims they look ridiculously skinny.

Thanks very much for the swift and detailed reply. You confirm my thoughts about the 4 1/2 inch wheels so I think I’ll get some. EMS currently advertise some “B” stock ones where the cream paint is not so good which is fine for me because they will need painting silver anyway.
Does anyone have experience of the Blockley tyres which seem to get favourable reviews on the net?

Gordon, Nice to read an old thread, so much seems to have gone on since I posted way back. FWIW the ESM supplied Nankang™ 155 tyres I put on the 4.5" rims are being replaced. I covered about 40K miles on them and the toe in may have been a tad off. Some wear so I rotated them instead of setting the toe in correctly. Not excessive wear but enough to tempt me to buy new. Full disclosure I didn't like the feel of these Nankang™ tyres, I think the sidewalls are a tad soft and the car always felt a little unsure at high speed cornering. Fast forward to today, I am fitting a disc brake conversion and decided to fit MGB disc wheels as I prefer the look. I have refurbished the wheels, and bought 155 size TOYO ™ from ESM. I haven't fitted them yet but they seem to have a stiffer sidewall. I don't want to confuse, just sharing my experience, as fickle as it may seem. No matter what, radial tyres versus cross ply is a leap into the future. @ John those tyres fill the wheel arch properly, well done! Salut Bruce
