I wonder if anyone has any door check straps for the 1.5 they might consider selling? My car only came with one(!) and as the resto gathers pace, I will be refitting the doors in the near future. I'm attaching two images of the check strap on the left front door. The rear ones are similar but don't have the right angled brackets bolted to the inside of the A posts. tony

Hello Tony I asked a similar question a year or so ago, rileymotorclub.proboards.com/thread/1088/door-check-armsand no one came to the rescue. These check arms are annoying. I am struggling to get my two remaining ones in order and one of the two I have repaired makes an annoying click each time I open the door. The 'L' brackets for the rear doors are spot welded in place thankfully . B

Hello Tony, Glad to offer help.
Over here I need to think outside the box more often than I am comfortable with. I am pretty much a lone ranger with no other Riley in proximity.
I will be interested to hear your findings.

Sorry for slow response - just back from holiday. These look just about right! I went on the Abingdonparts website and searched under 'door check strap' but this particular version did not show up. Do you know which car they come from on their list?
Msny thanks
Tony

Many thanks again - I've just ordered some, so fingers crossed they are the same or very similar to the 1.5.

Faith is pretty much all we have when chasing unicorns, no? Difficult without scale but comparison shows potential. If te end to end points align, and maybe a with oxy torch get it red hot to straighten the gentle curve of the TR one? Let us know how you make out. B

Well, the new straps have arrived. I did finally locate another original one in a bag - one of the rear ones, which interestingly is shorter as you can see on the photo. The front one looks a close match so will see how it fits when I eventually hang the doors, but I'll need to cut a new hole for the rear one and shorten accordingly. Less metal around but I doubt if the rear doors will be opened that much! Thanks again for all the helpful replies. tony

Bravo! Tony, seems you are on the right path. The rear doors don't open particularly wide so yes a shorter strap. Similar but detail point, I would like to meet the design chap that thought welding the door hinges to the body was a good idea! Yikes! Bruce

Hi Bruce
Typically a front and a rear used checkstrap have come up on eBay today!!
Re the welded hinges - I can only presume they were concerned the hinges may drop over time if the bolts loosened, so welded the hinges to the B posts. Absolute pain in the bum though as I had to (very carefully0 cut through the welds with an angle grinder to get the hinges off as they all needed new pins, except the right rear which was ok and left in place - it has become my datum point for the doors/front wings/ bonnet etc. If anybody is thinking of doing the same and their existing panel gaps are OK, then do try to keep one of the rear hinges in situ unless it is wrecked - they don't get opened that often so the pins may not be particularly worn. When you offer up repaired/replaced doors and front wings, at least you can get them back to the same place as they were originally; otherwise it is a right faff!!
Tony
