Can anyone advise on the best way to respray the black parts? I bought some satin black auto paint but the first can seems awfully unreliable - difficult to get a consistent spray, clogging etc.
Would you use cans and if so, then is it down to the brand to use - happy to get recommendations.

Hi Simon,
Just some general thoughts. I have recently used Rust-Oleum aerosols for painting some parts of my Riley and have had no problems, but have used plenty of other brands. A couple of points. Makes sure your preparation is good- either sand down to a very flat surface with wet and dry, or if really bad strip back to bare metal. I normally use a primer ( there are aerosol metal and etch primers available).
The other thing I watch for is humidity and temperature. They definitely work better on warm dry days. I generally hang the parts on bits of coat hanger wire in the sun for a while to absorb some heat. Additionally let your aerosol cans warm up as well. I have occasionally filled the laundry sink with hot water and dropped the aerosol cans in their for 5-10 minutes before shaking the cans thoroughly for a few more minutes to make sure they flow well and the nozzles don't block. You can clean the nozzles with thinners if they block.
Also pay attention to the drying times. I find it better to leave a few hours at least between coats otherwise funny things can happen like the paint goes flat or bloomy. So take your time.
Scott

Thanks. I'm not sure I can do much about the humidity at the moment as its Wales in November, but I'll try cleaning the nozzle with thinners and pre-warming the can tomorrow and see if that helps. I didn't pay much attention to the 30mins drying times and left it much longer.

Hello Simon, Clogging spray nozzles of these rattle cans is often a case of old inventory at the retail outlet. Shake the heck out of the can to better mix the contents? Like Scott I have had success with Rustoleum™. I often wire brush the surface and use many thin coats building up to the final wet coat. I show before and after photos of horn, this is all I have in my photo collection, apologies for poor quality. but you get the idea and see these clean up really nicely. Bruce

I had some issues with aerosol cans blocking and took them back to the paint seller. He just tipped them upside down and pointed to the base - hardly dimpled. Because the contents (base & pigment) can settle, you need to shake the cr*p out of them - the ball bearing if you do it properly will leave lots of dents/dimples on the base.

The 2nd can was much better, so I will go back to the first and shake it like mad, but I might pick up some Rustoleum and try that. I couldn't resist having a go at degreasing and cleaning the area that I've cleared and it looks like it might clean up ok. I'm off to the classic car show at the NEC tomorrow to look at all the things I'd buy if I had more than one garage. Simon

While you are in the engine bay, remove the radiator and the heater box air inlet horn for a paint re fresh as well.

Hi all,
I am stating to put things back together as I've decided to sell Biggles. I bought another car at the NEC Classic show and have agreed to let the dealer sell Biggles on commission. I'll put a notice in the Cars for Sale section once the dealer has put together an advert, unless there's any of you hankering after a leaf green 1.5, which we all know is the only proper colour :-).
Biggles is being picked up in about 10 days when the other car is delivered and will then be in Cambridgeshire, which will be nearer almost everyone except Bruce.
If I had a double garage, I'd be keeping him but it's probably better that someone else takes him on.
Thanks for all the help
Simon

Simon, I will miss your presence here.
That is a dynamite looking car, all you will need to do is put in petrol and enjoy.
Keep well and safe

I've just heard that Biggles has sold and is on his way to his new owner, who no doubt will be along here in a minute.
