Tony I have just looked at my car. Both lids have "holes". On my picture the one on the front chamber is visible but the other obscured by other parts. As far as I can tell though the hole is blind, although I guess the only way to be sure of that is to take the lid off and see if air or petrol will pass through it. I am assuming the hole you refer to in your picture is the one at 11 0'clock from the centre bolt on the RH float lid.

Duh - never thought to check if hole was patent. It is indeed a blind hole and there is no way through. May just be something to do with the casting? Thanks to you both for the prompt replies.
Pleased to report the car started today for the first time in four years - I rebuilt the engine then and left it under a worktop while the body marathon took over - great feeling when it finally fires up. Usual cock-up of putting in the distributor drive shaft the wrong way round initially - I really should know better by now.

Just admiring the nice rebuild jobs on your SUs Tony and Johnny. I have quite a bit of corrosion build up on the bodies of mine. Did either of you use ultrasonic cleaning or just degreaser and a soft brush?

Hi Scott My engine bay was a real mess when I first got the car as the second photo illustrates! No ultrasound bath, just cleaned all carb bodies with paraffin, then the dashpot covers were smoothed down with 240, then 400 grit sandpaper, then wire wool and finally polished on a bench buffer to a reasonable sheen. _ Tony

Tanks Tony. Nice job. Gives me something to aim for!
What paint did you use for the block, head and rocker cover? My engine is red and am assuming that is original. The green looks great.

Hello Tony Apologies for my late arrival to your request, been busy with work So I think what you are looking at is simply a lid casting that is multipurpose? This 'hole' you ask about as you have noticed is not a hole. Early float lids, (MG T series?? Austin 7??) had a 'tickler pin' that this casting was allowance for. I am of the understanding that when tuning these early carburetters one may or would want more fuel in the float chamber, so compressing this 'tickler pin' would lower the float and allow the fuel to enter. I am too young to offer any hands on advice however the 'hole' in the casting was for this. My ones have the cast in 'hole as well. Hope this helps Bruce

Ah yes motorbike carbs always had a tickler too.

Thanks Bruce - well, you live and learn!!
Scott - the paint I used was HR MOWOG colour engine block gloss enamel paint. I got it as an aerosol, but looking on eBay, it only seems to be sold now in tins for brushing or spraying. Went on really well and so far it is robust.
The Mk 3 1.5s had a green painted engine, the earlier ones Mk 1 (and Mk2?) a red one - colour looks like BMC/MG engine red. This should also be available from on eBay , MGOC spares, Moss etc.

Gosh Tony you set the bar pretty high with that under bonnet photo! Well done you. I seem to aim for the 'keep her running' sort of 'grunge' look under my bonnet. I think I achieved it! B

Maybe, but I bet it works better! Having rebuilt the carbs and got it started I have ascertained that the vacuum advance on the dizzy doesn't work and the voltage regulator is also knackered! The dynamo does knock out the right sort of voltage, but when wired up as a motor it doesn't turn which doesn't bode well either. I have to find a water leak and I'm losing a small amount of brake fluid as well, so snagging is pretty full on at present.
Need to get it all sorted before I finish priming/blocking the doors, bonnet and front panel before sending them off for paint in the spring.

Tony Perhaps have a chat with Martin at the Distributor Doctor? I believe he can either repair/rebuild your vacuum can on the distributor or simply sell you a new one. FWIW there is the advance curve indicated on the vacuum can; (example below) have a look at yours. I fiddled a bit with my control box to get things right. If left standing for a long period, the breaker contacts, both regulator & cut-out can glaze over. Give these a clean, drag a mega fine emery cloth between them and clean with spirits and then verify the mechanical air space settings. Best of luck de snagging. B
