I have a choice between 93 or 95 lead free petrol at my local filling station here in South Africa. I presume these are different to late 1950's-early 1960's petrol, and that I should buy the 93. Should I run my Riley 1.5 on it as is, or should I add something to it? Also, please advise what would be the best engine oil and brake fluid to use.

Use the highest octane rating you can get and if you are not doing a lot of prolonged high speed running this fuel will be perfectly adequate if your engine pinks under load check the ignition timing and if it is ok use the vernier adjustment on the distributor to slightly retard the timing this should reduce the incidence of pinking but if you are using the vehicle on motorways a lot then I would consider hardened valve seats,I Have used Tetra Ethyl Lead to boost the octane rating to 100+ but it needs careful handling and may not be available in SA, additives are ok but not for prolonged use due to high speed and high mileage usage .
With regard to brake fluid if you have a new system as it has been overhauled then Silicone fluid is the way to go as it is fit and forget but it does not mix with other fluid so if you wish to change the original fluid DOT4 will be the fluid you need.
Hope this info is of some use NP
