Hello everyone, I have embarked on my 1959 Riley 1.5 revival / restoration, I’m starring at a filthy rusty motor, generator, starter, as well as a filthy engine bay and frayed wiring harness etc and I’m contemplating a bunch of things. Two contemplations are:
1. Do I rebuild / refurbish the generator or convert to an alternator? If you have done this conversion can u tell me about it and recommend an alternator.
2. I need to replace the wiring harness, what do you recommend. The net is full of options?
Thanks Dave.

Hi Dave, An alternator conversion is relatively easy - specially if you are re-wiring the car anyway. Autosparks supply to quality wiring looms to original spec (I bought one last year). Even better than that they can tailor make the loom to your specifications - I ordered mine with the wiring for an alternator. Service was great and price is reasonable. All you have to do is buy a suitable alternator with brackets (? an MGB one?) and you're away All the best, Roger

Hello Dave, I am a purist and find the dynamo adequate for my use. I do have relays for; horns, headlamps, heater blower motor, driving lamp etc. to protect the switches. Many on this side of the pond install a Delco™ CS130 alternator. These are plentiful, (a GM fitment to myriad models) and comes with variety of amps output. I believe this to be a one wire alternator conversion and 'plug n play'. Be aware you will most likely need to swap the drive pulley from your dyanmo to the alternator. I think there is a ' dummy' control box to replace the OE one that carries a 40 amp? fuse. Dynalite? maybe can help. A simple bolt on bracket will be needed to accommodate the shorter length alternator. I second Roger advice to contact Autosparks. I have used them even from this side of the pond, for many electrical parts/components harness for my other cars. Have fun Bruce finding a new spot for the ignition coil will be another item needing attention.

Hi I did this to my Wolseley some time ago. Standard, new MGB alternator. I also rewired it, wire by wire. Herb Attachments:Saga 35 Alt in Wooly.pdf (397.24 KB)
