I am almost certain many of you have fitted a front disc brake conversion kit?
I am thinking of entering the 21st century to join you, any advice?

HI I FITTED A DISC BRAKE CONVERSION FROM EMS MORRIS MINOR SPARES, THE CONVERSION IS FORD BASED WITH STEEL HUBS AND TAPER ROLLER BEARINGS MY RILEY HAS A BRAKE SERVO FITTED SO THE BRAKES ARE EXCELLENT,THE MOT INSPECTOR COMMENTED HOW GOOD THE BRAKES PERFORMED AT THE LAST MOT. THE KIT IS DESIGNED FOR A MORRIS 1000 I MODIFIED THE BRAKE PIPES ON THE INNER WING TO SUIT THE KIT,I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU CHECK THE CONDITION OF SUSPENSION RUBBERS AS THE DISC BRAKES WILL PUT EXTRA LOAD ON THE SUSPENSION. BEFORE I FITTED THE BRAKE CONVERSION MY RILEY HAD BEEN FULLY RESTORED WITH A COMPLETE BRAKE OVERHAUL,THE BRAKES WERE GOOD FOR A 60S CAR BUT EVEN WHEN THEY WERE BEDDED IN THE BRAKE PERFORMANCE WAS POOR COMPARED TO THE DISCS,
I HAVE PHOTOS OF THE CONVERSION BUT HAVE PROBLEMS POSTING, IF YOU WANT TO MESSAGE ME I WILL TRY AN EMAIL

Hello David, Thanks for this. This reads as the way to go. FWIW I am seriously considering the Grumpy disc kit offered by ESM Spares as I want to use road wheels with a 4.5" PCD and the Ford kit appears to be more difficult modification to accommodate this. Did you need to add a larger reservoir for the brake master cylinder? is this tiny OE Girling™ reservoir adequately large? B

THE FORD KIT WAS BETTER FOR MY CAR,WHICH IS RUNNING MORRIS 1000 VAN WHEELS SLIGHTLY WIDER THAN STD AND 165X80 TYRES SO I NEEDED WHEEL SPACERS TO STOP THE TYRE RUBBING ON THE TRACK ROD END, I FOUND THE FORD KIT WHEN FITTED DIDN'T NEED THE WHEEL SPACERS. ESM DOES RECOMMEND A REMOTE RESERVOIR FOR THE MOGGIE 1000 BUT THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT MASTER CYLINDER TO THE RILEY1.5 THAT NEEDS A MOD COMPLETED BEFORE YOU FIT THE CONVERSION, I USED THE STD RILEY MASTER CYLINDER THAT WAS NEW OLD STOCK, WHEN I ROAD TEST THE CAR THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL WAS MORE THAN WITH THE DRUM BRAKES BUT NOW I HAVE COMPLETED 500MLS THE PEDAL HAS LESS TRAVEL AND THE BRAKE PERFORMANCE IS EXCELLENT IT REALLY DOES STOP WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.
HOPE THIS HELPS DAVID.

Hi Bruce, my car was converted to Marina discs with a Lockheed booster by the previous owner in 1990's - a standard Morris Minor type conversion of the time. They seem fine although I have nothing to compare them with. When you proceed please weigh the new (and existing) components so we know what the unsprung weight difference is. J

Thanks for this chaps. I have made a bit of progress. After some other intel exchange and conversing with ESM Tech lads, it would appear that the Grumpy Marina disc brake kit is easiest to modify to accommodate the 4.5" PCD wheels I am planning on using. I think with what I know now, I can plug the 4" PCD holes in the Marina hub flange and machine/re drill for the 4.5" PCD studs. I will be doing this in the next month or so and will report back with my progress/result. David, I think the Ford kit has slightly larger disc pads but modifying disc and hub to meet my requirements not so easy. If I remain the 4" PCD I would have followed the route you took. No remote servo of course. John, good suggestion for weight comparison. Won't change much but a nice to know next time I find myself in Monte Carlo for the Grand Prix. @herb, Interesting DIY kit you show. I wish I had more exposure to contemporary parts that will fit these cars, a DIY kit is not so difficult to undertake. FWIW I explored a DIY attempt, and exchanged with a fellow in the Netherlands but alas discs and other bits just don't exist on this side of the pond. Keep well and thanks again to all. Bruce

A tad more progress at my end. I did receive my disc brake kit but I now have a hurdle to overcome. The supplied flex hose between flitch panel and suspension upright attachment point, is made for a Morris Minor application and will not marry up with the Riley as is. I show the ends below; The large end fitting is not compatible with the Riley. in order to connect OE to the Riley flitch panel (below) I will need a hose with both ends as the nutted one shown above. For us that have done these conversions how did we overcome this joint ? Any advice? Hose part number? Thanks B

SORRY I MESSED UP THE EXPLANATION, THE FLEXI HOSE WAS SUPPLIED WITH THE DISC BRAKE KIT, SPEND TIME POSITIONING BRAKE PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET TO STOP FLEXI PIPE KINKS WHEN THE STEERING IS TURNED ON FULL LOCK.

Thanks for this David. Very clean installation. Bravo! I have the Marina kit not the Ford kit as you show. Major differences I think is the caliper is rear mounted on Marina kit whilst the Ford kit mounts the caliper on front. I prefer the Ford kit but due to wanting to increase the wheel PCD the Marina kit is easier to modify. My life is full of compromises! Also the Marina kit is a bit funky. It uses a hard line from the caliper, and fastens to a bracket on the upright to transition to the flex hose, then on to the car body. A flex hose is provided with the Marina kit and is of course Morris Minor specific. The 'L' bracket is already on the Morris body and the hook up straight forward. Not so for the Riley, I am wanting to use the bulkhead fitting hose per original Riley brake lines. Full disclosure I haven't offered the kit up to my car yet. Hopefully over next few weeks I will be at my car and do a dry fit to see if other issue present themselves. I suspect that the brake hard line to the caliper will be a tricky for my installation. The Morris Minor upright uses the lower drilling for the steering arm and the Marina kit uses the nut of this steering arm to attach this transition bracket. On the Riley we use the upper drilling for the steering arm so I expect I will encounter interference to this arm and the hard line. I imagine some inventive pipe bending will be the solution. Question; do you recall if your brake line fittings are standard 3/8" UNF nuts? If I cannot find a suitable off te shelf hose, I think I tracked down a supplier that offers a length of steel braid flex brake line and end fittings to match so I will make up custom hoses if needed. salut Bruce

Hi Bruce,
I have absolutely no idea why I suggested a clutch hose, senility setting in.
I've successfully used MGB front hoses, for all 3, on my Wooly, might do for you, too.
