Why did Riley go from the 2.5 to the 1.5? Seems the 2.5 was a good engine and the 1.5 is underpowered seems they would have gone from the 1.5 to the 2.5 but did the opposite? Just curious, thanks

The 1.5 was actually available first, as it was introduced by Riley as a 12/4 a couple of years before the introduction of the 16/4 or Big Four. These engines were carried over into the Nuffield Riley cars post 1938 and then post-war to the RMA and RMB. Matthew

as stated above the 'big 4 ' ( 2443cc)was a later development and used in more expensive vehicles.. post ww2 (and possibly before) the aspect of affordablity lead to 'economy' taking precedent .. many of the early cars on Britians roads are so chronically underpowered as to be dangerous to use today..even the 2.5 RM is somewhat challenged to keep up with todays traffic..although the Pathfinder (110 bhp) does an adequate job..
