Hi All,
On your restored 1.5's what have you done about the join between wings and front panel.
Have you left it with a "groove" or have you had it filled and smoothed?

Never restored my car but I would leave it alone. In the flange for the bolts right at the front there is a spot weld, (very close to the drain hole) joining these 2 panels, the wing & front panel.

Following the accident last year, I should know this......but unfortunately don't. A new wing and front panel were fitted and therefore both the new N/S and existing O/S wings had to meet and marry up with the replacement panel. Yes, there is a groove and someone who undertook the mechanical repairs mentioned that the gap between the panels were simply filled with a body work jointing compound. The groove is still there on the now finished article and is, I believe, common to all 1.5s.
Bruce........didn't know there was a spot weld. I just thought and assumed it was just all bolted together.

I was just wondering what it would look like smoothed over so the whole of that section looked like one.
Obviously, I appreciate this would take it away from its originality a little but may look nice.

I needed to remove a front wing from George to sort some corrosion at the sills etc. As mentioned the wing is attached with fasteners at the top flange, flange at front panel and some fasteners at the A post accessible from inside the cabin, (one a bugger to get at as I recall).
We are discussing the joint at the wing/front panel? I would not fill this in for the simple reason of the need to remove the wing in future. Re doing body filling is never nice to do. Ever own a Mini? These wings are weld on and trust me you really appreciate bolt on wings after that job!
@graham, If your car has never been 'attacked' as George was until I received him, one can find a spot weld on the horizontal flange of the wing & front panel. I suspect at the Swindon? or Cowley? works, when assembling the body this spot weld held everything together at initial panel alignment?? Then the bolts where snugged up along the flanges, wing & front panel. Since I removed my front wing and installed a replacement the fit has never been particularly good along this seam/joint. I intend to address this over the winter as George has an appointment with the welder machine, to finally sort the bad sills. Note to self "do it right the first time".
Many manufacturers of the era had this sort of body assembly. FWIW I think the Mk 1 cars with the wrap around lower grill treatment & turn indicator 'pod' tend to draw ones eye away from this joint.

Hi DLM,
The standard finish from the factory was to leave the 'groove' between the front panel and wing. I have seen one or two cars with it filled in, but it doesn't look too good and, as Bruce says, it would be a pain to sort out if you need to remove the wing.
Best stay original and just bolt it into place.

Yeh, fair enough I'll probably leave as is.
