Hi Vue,
It can be done, but I found my ears just aren't up to distinguishing the differences. If you read the article, I posted above, I discuss 4 ways I know of balancing the carbs, some easier than others.

I think Chase probably used 50 when they put the head on. Won't it be sweet when I eventually drive it again! Jonathan, Yes the victory will be sweet. Having the cylinder head checked is a good thought. Coolant does a great job of decarbonizing! Not wishing to alarm and as shown in your photos, I find the oily state of the front two cylinders interesting?, particularly after such a short duration run time. salut Bruce

Certainly soft carbon. Carbs will need setting once the head and gasket is back on and it can be run as an IC not a Steam engine!

Hi,
It seems as if you need to download the pdf of the Idiots guide, and save it. Once that's done you can then open it to view.

Update on this. Head has been pressure tested, all fine. Head refitted with new Payen gasket and torqued up to 54ft/lb (73NM). That was hard work. Carb jet positions reset. Engine start again today. Running sweetly with nice tickover at 800 rpm and mixtures good. Took the car out for a 10 minute run. Ran really nicely, will be very lively once run-in. No issues on restart so no problems with head gasket this time. I will not be retorqueing head nuts in the sense of backing a 1/4 turn and retorqueing but I may go over all the nuts at 54ft/lb just to be sure nothing has significantly settled. Will be having a scotch tonight!

I will raise a dram of Dalwhinnie to celebrate the triumph with you. B

The first 500 miles have now passed without incident so I have drained the running in oil and refilled with 20/50 plus a new filter. Head nuts re-torqued and tappets set.Plugs are a nice colour so carbs will be left alone apart from bringing tickover back down to 800 (it drifted up to 1000 during running in period). I'll also be doing another compression test and gradually adjusting the timing by road testing to approach but stay clear of pinking. After another 500 I will probably visit Peter Burgess for a rolling road session. Fuel consumption has been 30mpg+ during running in.
