I am building an early 18G engine to fit to my car. As we know we have the 'MGA 1489' engine fitted from factory so I thought I knew what to do. Simply follow the course so many MGA owners have done to fit a 18g (3 main) engine to their car. Not the case. One part giving me grief is the water pump fit. I bought a MGB 3 main water pump, GWP115, fits the block/volute perfectly, however it is too long, 4.125", and the fan will meet the radiator. Then I bought a MGA water pump, GWP103. Again the impeller fits the volute just like mom fits pop, and is the correct length, 3.75". The issue I encountered the flange to volute/block. (see below) the volute of the 18G engine is different from the 1489 engine and has that small cavity at the lower part. The dowel holes are exposed, this is not an issue. The issue is the lower volute has a cavity, that the gasket and the mounting flange of the casting of the MGA water pump does not cover. So advice? I need a pump that accommodates the 18g volute mounting flange, dowels, etc. and a length no greater than the MGA water pump, 3.75", which BTW is the same as the Riley water pump depth. For those of you have done this conversion what was your solution? TIA Bruce
