Finding water leaking from the bottom radiator hose (or at least where I thought it was coming from) I found that was the least of my problems. A large piece of the pump/distributor bracket casting broken away, one of those five minute jobs that no doubt will take days and days. Such is the joy of old Riley's

Would it be possible to do temp repair by cleaning and degreasing the break, then applying silicone sealing compound and, replacing broken off part, and tightening the clamp bolt, until you can find someone who welds alloy?

Getting there, but would have been a lot quicker and easier if I hadn't managed to lose the broken piece. So had to turn/mill a replacement part before giving it over to be welded. Replacement part fabricated and in position, ready for welding. A steel sleeve inserted into the casting to keep things in place. Welding complete, will need a little bit of "dressing up" before refitting to the car.

Made up a metal strap which will hopefully even out the pressure all round the casting instead of just relying on the weld. Strap made from 20mm x 3mm EN3b (mild steel).

The repair looks a good belt and braces approach, only time will tell!

A bit more progress, water pump and distributor refitted to the engine. Will now of course have to re-time the ignition plus sort out the bottom radiator hose - the reason why I had to take it off in the first place.
