I am about to fit a spin on filter kit (the Moss MGA one). I wondered what filters people favour. When I had an MGB I used Mann 916/1 filters but the filter on that was upright rather than hanging as the new kit will be. Is an anti drain back valve needed with a hanging filter. Thoughts and recommendations appreciated.

Use Unipart GFE443 or failing that use MG Rover 12G2400SLP, I have been using these for ten years without trouble. Hope this helps? NP

Hello Johnny Oil filters tend to be personal choice or availability rather than 'which is best' . I think any main brand provides adequate filtering for these engines. Drain back valves is pretty much standard these days. Your Mann™ is a very good filter. FWIW I use a Wix™ #61068, I buy a 6 pack and share this with my MGB. FWIW on the side of the packaging for my Wix™ filter all is revealed, now a MANN™ product. Brand loyalty is just that it would appear If I may alert you to a potential short coming of this filter housing kit from Moss. The adapter bolt may foul on some filter housings. I had this happen on my first effort fitting this kit, I think it was a Fram™ filter? The filter seals just fine, the issue is the filter metal thread height jams against this adapter bolt and next oil change when we unscrew the filter the center bolt unwinds from the engine block Yikes! (even with the locking tab in place) Needless to say this causes grief and mega oil spillage. To avoid this check the height of the lower surface of this adapter bolt to the casting flange. I machined off just enough material to have the surface slightly below the casting flange . I show this below; This spin on adapter certainly makes for a less challenging oil change. Bruce

Thanks Robert/Nigel? Good to know your experience. Bruce thanks too, especially for the heads up on that possible interference issue. I will check that carefully before I fit it.
