I have parted out a very rusty 4/72... I have put the 1622 motor aside. [Too bad it is an AMW block with no drilling for a tacho]. Is the gearbox (or any of its internals) of any possible future use for my 1.5, or do I just pass it on to the club spares? John

Hi John, If the gearbox is the 4 speed 3 synchro one, I think that the internals are interchangeable with your 1.5. I'm about to start pulling the noisy 'box out of my Wolseley 1500 and swap the innards with good ones, from an MG Magnette. A useful reference is mgaguru.com/mgtech/gearbox/gt1.htm. You might think it strange to look up an MGA site, but much good info on it, not just gearboxes. Remember many BMC cars were parts bin models, and many parts are interchangeable. Herb

has anybody actually done the ford sierra / toyota 5 speed gear box conversion to a 1.5 or is it all talk & assumptions without any factual evidence & proof it works,

I thought about it and queried the Wolseley 1500 forum www.wolseleyforum.com/topic/15806-5-speed-swap/The Riley / Wolseley/ Austin Lancer / Morris Major all had the same body and gearbox. The 'box has a very steep bell housing which also has a notch in it to clear the steering rack. This makes it impossible to fit a 5 speed, since they have a much less steep bell housing and no notch. It may be possible to use an early MGB 3 synch, OD 'box and mix and match the 3rd motion shaft and extension, with the OD on it, to a Riley 'box. Herb
