The brake pedal on my 59 RHD all of a sudden has decided to ride about 2 inches higher than normal (and 2" higher than the clutch). What stops the brake/clutch pedals from returning too far? I can't tell that anything has broken. The master cylinder looks good. No loss of fluid, but definitely about 2 inches higher than it should be. Any suggestions appreciated. Attachments:

Hi,
If the brake system is anything like that on my Wolseley, then this is a big DO NOT DRIVE. I've had this happen after having the master cylinder re-sleeved. There is a circlip at the open end of the bore, that keeps the innards in. The re-sleeving removed the groove for this circlip and all the innards tried to come out. I was lucky I didn't come to grief.

Hi
Agreed.
I rebuilt my master cylinder and refitted during my restoration. It was while just bleeding the brakes that the same thing happened to me. I removed the master cylinder and confirmed the circlip had come out of its groove, allowing the push rod to move out an inch or two. I decided I must have failed to seat the circlip correctly so just put it back (carefully!) and all ok since. If your master cylinder hasn't been touched recently, it could be the circlip has failed.

Thanks all. That is the only thing I could think of. The cylinder has not been touched for several years so I am thinking the circlip has failed. I will pull the cylinder and likely confirm

Be aware that there is a service memo referencing this pushrod circlip. Ensure you have the correct master cylinder? and parts? all these years on these cars can suffer an indiscretion. @ Herb, the Riley uses Girling brake system versus your Wolseley Lockheed system. Subtle but important. B

Well, yesterday morning, I pulled the master brake cylinder and sure enough, the circlip had popped out. Looks like it was never installed correctly. Took 60 years, 70,000 miles and 3 drivers to get it to pop out. Had to clean 60 years worth of grease and stuff out of half of the groove to get the clip to seat properly. Re-installed, quickly bled the brakes myself and 8:30am on my way to a car show. Took 1st place in OTHER category with stiff competition at the Original British Car Day show in Adamstown, MD, USA.
Thanks for the comments.

Congratulations - any photos of the car for us to admire?

Hi Bruce,
I know that the Riley uses Girling, and I did mention that I referenced my Wolseley. I did assume that the Girling and Lockheed were similar in construction, when I said about the circlip. Turned out to be the problem.
Cheers
