In preparation for my engine upgrade I ordered a pair of halfshafts from Peter May Engineering. They look very good quality. For anyone planning to remove/replace halfshafts it is an easy job, as described in the Workshop Manual. As suggested in the manual I drained the diff, but even so a little oil does dribble out when you start to pull the halfshaft and drips down onto the end of the brake shoe. I used a wadge of paper towel tucked under the halfshaft/bearing shell flange and over the shoe to deflect/absorb this oil. I also replaced the large O rings as well as the paper gaskets.

Stuart,
I believe that the halfshafts are common to the Minor, Riley 1.5 and Wolesley 1500.
Anti-tramp bars help to reduce the excess torque reversals in the halfshafts, but the root cause is that they, and also the very coarse spline on the diff end, are just not capable of transmitting the torque on a long term basis.
The Riley 1.5 and Wolesley 1500 both have a 3.7 diff, so the higher engine torque transmitted through the halfshafts is managed to a degree by the higher diff ratio.
this was taken from the moggy minor forum old peter may gets a good report, nothing worse than having to fish a broken one out ! When we restored our Minor we fitted a very well modified 1380 A-Series and put in the 'toughened' halfshafts and anti-tramp bars and had no failures in ~15,000 miles. THEN I decided to fit a Tran-X LSD and on the first outing with the new diff, we have a climbing LH turn from a standing start at the end of our road (200m). Not very many revs (cold engine) and click went the RH halfshaft, as the load was transferred across the diff! Fortunately being a 'plate' type LSD, I could creep back home.
Then fitted Peter May's EN24 'Competition' halfshafts and almost 40,000 miles later have had no problems.

My brother had a standard Riley 1.5 in the 80s. His wife had a halfshaft break as she left the supermarket car park with two young children on board!

Grandmother and suck eggs time, but did you use Wellseal on the paper gasket? I forgot the first time and ended up with lots of oil over the brake shoes etc.l leaks after redid everything and used Wellseal as advised in the Manual.

Tony Hmm my manual doesn't mention using wellseal it only says be sure to replace the paper gaskets. I did consider using blue Hylomar but didn't want to make future removal a problem. I have not yet refilled diff or run the car on the road so could revisit this. Any other thoughts?

Yes less cost indeed! good shopping. This is a mega simple solution to the Achilles heel axle halfshaft to any power upgrade. B

Refitted the halfshafts using Hylomar Blue on the gasket and today refilled the diff. So hopefully another job complete.

Hi, I’ve got a pair of Peter May half shafts on order, has anybody fitted an ATB diff as opposed to a plate LSD? I have an ATB in my Mk1 Cortina & Anglia with no problems. Thanks
