Have any of you thought of installing the rear view mirror to the top of the dash, similar to MGA, AH big & small, etc?
Feel free to call me out if this whacky?

Hi Bruce,
A nice idea, but I think you would have viewing angle problems, i.e. you won't be able to see out very well.

You may be right Herb, however many other period cars have top of dash mount mirrors? Cooper, I want to dash mount not hang from top!. Something like this, maybe, www.holden.co.uk/p/dash_mounted_interior_mirror_height_adjustablebefore you ask why, I will tell you I have an idea to put a small console above the windscreen housing a clock and a switch. Salut Bruce

Bruce i think you will have vibration problems mounting ontop of the dash, have alook at the early e type jaguar they have a chrome rod that the mirror is mounted on,the rod is mounted on top of the dashboard and to top of the windscreen. just a thought David

Thanks David and Herb, You chaps are doing a great job at talking me out of this. However I think you may be on to something about the vibration. I can't recall my Frogeye mirror, or my AH 100/6 mirror or my Jaguar 1K120 vibrating but I was probably having too much fun to think about what is happening behind me. I will take the Jag out for a spin on the weekend, prior to snow arriving to look at what level of vibration I experience. FWIW the Standard Ten has a dash mounted mirror, sort of where all this nonsense started for me. Bruce

Hi Bruce, a thought just hit me, try a piece of mirror, blue tacked into place to see what the view is.

out of curiosity is the law still if you have a rear view mirror you dont need wing mirrors, i no holes are there drilled, ive seen cars without them & the wing seems to flow so much nicer

No particular law that I am aware of this side of the pond. I would think most drivers are interested and trained to know what is going on around them and behind them. However having written that one wonders with some of the stunts I see happenings on the roads today! Funny you mention this, I have never thought of the one-point-five being particularly aerodynamic in design, rather quite the opposite? with the upright front and windscreen etc.. Bruce

I think it depends where you are in the world.
In the UK it is governed by the MOT handbook. For passenger cars it says:
Rear view mirrors and indirect vision devices can be any of the following positions:
a. an exterior mirror or device that provides a view along the offside of the vehicle b. an exterior mirror or device that provides a view along the nearside of the vehicle c. an interior mirror or device which provides a view to the rear of the vehicle
For vehicles:
First used before 1 August 1978 At least one mirror/device in any of the above positions.
First used on or after 1 August 1978 but before 26 January 2010 Two mirrors/devices, one of which must be in position ‘a’
First used on or after 26 January 2010 Three mirrors/devices, in position ‘a’, ‘b’ and ‘c’ - unless internal mirror does not give view to rear
Kind regards

Hallam, Thanks for that.
I think the addition of the front door vent window mounted overtaking mirrors is a nice addition and probably more practical in use to the wing mounted mirrors?

I think that's true - although it depends on the wing mirrors.
My parents have a Sunbeam Alpine with 'bullet' type mirrors on the front wings and they are worse than useless, so we fitted an auxiliary overtaking mirror to the driver's side quarterlight.
Our One Point Five has oblong wing mirrors about halfway down the wings and there are pretty good but there is a big blind spot, especially on the motorway, so it has got an auxiliary mirror fitted on the quarterlight as well.

the only reason i brought this up & the mot post above backs this up, is at a show earlier this year there was a mini 60S with no wing mirrors & my 1.5 ive a bullet one on the door quarter window & filled the wing holes in, i found the ones down the wing awful, but respect to folk who drive with them
