After a long lay-off, fuel pump not self-priming. After filling carburettor float bowl, engine starts, and there is no more problem until the next lengthy lay-off. Any ideas?

Loss of priming of both electric and mechanical fuel pumps can be caused by debris on the suction gauze fuel filter drying out and effectively causing a blockage. Some pumping performance will be restored when whetted by fuel. Less likely, the pump internal valves have not sealed when trying to suck air initially when dry.
