I'm going to replace the front brake shoes whilst I've got everything apart. I have several sets of the old style shoes along with the brass rivets (but not a rivet gun).
Is it worth the hassle of making these up (and presumably drilling out the old ones) or should I just buy a set already assembled? What would you do?

Hi Simon, I would just buy a set already made up - just a bit more peace of mind.
Thinking aloud here ....... can you get brake shoes that are bonded rather riveted? I remember a few years back we had some for our classic racer and they were superior to the riveted ones. Not sure if they are available for the 1.5 though.

Simon, You chaps over there have so many more sources to put vintage things right. I did a search around to find some bonded ones but was not successful. If you do a search and find a source please provide the outlet, I will buy some for sure.
I needed to re line my brake shoes with rivet type lining. One needs a pretty simple but specific tool to install these rivets properly, (brakes are pretty important ). End all I used a farm tractor service place to install the linings. This riveting of linings is still normal practice on farm tractors, who knew?. Not so easy to find in a city of 1.8M !

There are all kinds of brake shoe relining places here in the USA, you just send in the old ones and they send them back with new linings, riveted or bonded. Rolf

Look what I found.. they did the Oxford Motorsport's 1.5 - www.saftek.co.uk/classics.htmlUnfortunately I need to put one side back together before I can get to the other side (oh I need a bigger garage) - so I can't send off all 4 in one go. So I'll probably just buy some.. nice looking company though

I got a complete set of exchange shoes from the club. Anything old is probably asbestos, which you will be dispersing into the air as you drill out the rivits.

That asbestos thought had crossed my mind - I ordered a full set from Earl parts today
