I'd be interested to know what people are using for their engine oil. Gone are the days of popping to Halfords for a can of Castrol GTX! I'm considering Castrol XL 20W50. Anyone got any other recommendations?
John.

Hi I am currently using Penrite 20W60 at £35 for 5 litres and their straight 40W £40 for 5 Litres in my gearbox both oils are very good in my opinion other than that if you can find a fully synthetic 20w50 for classic engine use I think their are at least two or three manufacturers who make this but it is not cheap £50 to £70 for 5 litres. I did use Valvoline 20w50 synthetic in my Daimler and it cured a large oil pressure drop at idle when hot. Hope this helps NP

I use Halfords 20/50 Classic mineral oil in my engine which I was told was the same as the old Duckhams. I do not know if that is true but I a sheds tidy recently and found a full 5l can of Duckhams of fond memory plus one of Castrol. I compared a small quantity of the Halfords with the Duckhams and found it to be exactly the same colour. I know that this is not conclusive but it makes one think.Harry

John, For day-to-day use, I use Halfords 20/50 classic oil as well. Like Oakall2 I have noticed that it does look a lot like the old Duckhams 'green'oil! For more spirited driving, trackdays and racing we use Millers Oils Classic Sport High Performance 20/50. This is a fully synthetic oil - but it is highly recommended for modified B-series engines. We have used it for many years now - and its always been perfect - even in longer races in the heat of summer and cold November trackdays! Roger

My understanding is that any Dino type motor oil with a 50 in it has the necessary ZDDP content to protect the flat bottom cam followers these engines use.
FWIW I use pretty much any standard motor oil (20W50) rating, often Castrol brand GTX however. My cars don't see much more than 3000 miles per driving season and I always change out the oil in the fall prior to winter storage. I also install a new filter for good measure.
So far so good.
