Yet another little problem which is solved temporarily by tying the rear door arm-rests together. The lock on one of the doors does not work and the rattling emanating from that door suggests that a screw is loose !!!! I need a 2-pin screwdriver to release the arm-rest. Does anyone have one and is so where did you get it from ? I have looked on the net but they were too small. I have tried, unsuccessfully to move it using a normal screwdriver in one of the slots with no success. I live in hope for an answer. Harry

Hi Harry
This is an awful design and a common problem and as these have usually not been touched since the car was made are often very very tight. I looked for a slotted screwdriver years ago but never found anything small enough but strong enough so Whenever I've needed to remove one of these I've resorted to drilling the protruding centre piece of the threaded arm in the centre of the nut back a few millimetres until it is below the level of the slotted nut and then you can use a normal flathead screwdriver across the two slots. This allows you to save the nut too and re-use it for reassembly. Best to spray a bit of WD40 up there over a couple of days to try and help free it off and you need to be careful to drill straight but it's always worked for me, eventually. Good luck. Rob.

Thanks for that - I had not considered that option. I will give it a try. Harry

Do you mean the two screws buried in holes in the plastic part of the armrest? I made a suitable driver by cutting away the middle part of a convectional straight screwdriver so it has the two pins, like the top part of an H, needed to remove/replace those screws. It is similar to the driver I use for spoking up a bike wheel. G

Yes those are the screws. I think that I will spend a pleasant evening filing a flat blad screwdriver rather than the, although welcome, suggestion of drilling the centre arm. Many thanks. Harry

It will probably be hard. Both the screwdriver blade and the filing! This is the ideal job for a small Dremel. Good luck. G

Harry, These barrel nuts can present a challenge for sure. Grommit has it, and this is the tool I ended up with,
I just used an old screwdriver, and notched the business end. One tip broke off on one of the nuts so I just took the screw driver to the grinder and cut a new notch. Use plenty of penetrating oil prior to your attack, these will put up a fight.
Good luck
Bruce
