I've got a leaking diff. It's a severe leak. It's not the oil seal as that's been replaced. I've been told that's some sort of crushable washer that has failed although I'm not sure about that. The chap that works on Mabel from time to time (one day I'll get a garage with light and power) has seen this before and has ended up sending the diff off for reconditioning. Ouch - sounds like £££££s. I've a diff that someone gave me and I was told it's for a 1.5 but I have my doubts. It has various MOWOG marks but are there any identifying marks that can actually confirm it's for a 1.5. It's been removed from whatever car it was in before by cutting through the prop shaft and this seems to have a too small diameter. It measures approx 2" in diameter. There's also some sort of flexible hose coming from the casing. I've tried to attach a picture and hopefully you can see what I mean. Anyone any thoughts as to whether this is a 1.5 diff or how the diff that's installed can be repaired. If it has to be reconditioned, then so be it. That can't be a bad thing as it'll then be good for as long as Mabel and I are together.

As far as I'm aware there's only 2 places it can leak either pinion oil seal or the gasket between diff & axle.first check that the axle breather is clear as pressure build up could Maybe pass your oil seal,or find a way of leaking on the gasket.if your diff is quiet & not clonking shouldn't need reconing,stick with it.as for picture the pipe looks like brake pipe T piece junction

Totally agree re places where a diff can leak from. It's just a mystery. All should be answered in the next few days......hopefully.

Hello Graham, You may well be a long ways down this road by now .....................
The 'pumpkin' you show does not appear to be a Riley/Morris Minor differential set. I do not recognize the hose 'thingy' that is there.
Only 3 places that I know of that can leak. 1) the filler & drain plugs, 2) the gasket flange to axle flange and 3) the pinion seal.
My money is on the pinion seal, evidence will be a oil spray pattern on the floor pan at the rear of the car. The oil is thrown by the rotation of the propeller shaft. I am not familiar with this 'crushable washer that has failed' that you mention. I did replace this pinion seal on George and so far 7 years on no leaks.

it could well the the seal was not installed correctly.. basically it seals on the outer edge of the diff casing..and on the inner edge it seals on the outer surface of the flange the propshaft bolts to..(which must be squeaky clean and free of any grooves or burrs) its easy to screw up and damage the seal on installation.. all it tales is for the round spring inside to become dislodged and the seal will not properly seat on the flange...
As regards the crush washer. its critically important that the distance between pinion and crown wheel is set correctly ..or your will experience a myriad of problems.. most commonly axle whine.. if in ANY doubt take it to a diff specialist to set up for you.. .
Identifying a Riley/W 1500 diff :- they are 3 .73 ratio.. the number of gear teeth are stamped on the casing as 2 numbers, which you divide for actual ratio.. the only other production BMC A series vehicle to use this ratio was the later version of MG Midget with the triumph 1500cc engine.. As for tube diameter..2" sounds about right..the riley and wolseley had a much narrower tube than most of the 'other' variants .. the narrow tube is actually stronger than the larger diameter one on the Morris minor.. U.Js are same part though..
