I am having problems lining up the front doors on my 1.5 The hinges have been welded to the door and bodywork ,is this normal or is it another in the long line of bodges I have unearthed. In the workshop manual it show door opening adjustment is via a jack across the opening or is this just after accident damage. Any else had this problem??

The hinge should be welded to the 'A' or 'B' post depending whether front or rear but the hinge should be mounted to the door by the way of two 1/2 inch bolts per hinge. These bolt through to a captive plate inside the door that allows for some door adjustment. I've never heard of the hinge being welded to the actual door so if that is the case it does sound like a bodge I'm afraid.

Hello As Rob writes; "The hinge should be welded to the 'A' or 'B' post "
I as well had a devil of a time aligning a new door to my car. The nut plates in the door are not adjustable as one would have thought. I show the upper hinge in the photo below.
so a lot of tugging, twisting and pulling was required. I won out in the end.
Curiously my hinges are held to the body with 5/16" UNF fasteners, not the 1/2" as Rob writes, perhaps a typo?
Have fun
Bruce

Finally got the door off only to find there is no adjustment on the door as the bolts go into fixed nuts inside the door.Goodness knows why the hinges were welded to the door luckily the welding was up tothe poor standard on the rest of the car so it didnt take long to remove the welds.I shall have to be inventive to get some adjustment .Having checked the rest of the doors it was only the drivers door that had the extra weld!!! Yes the bolts are 5/16 unf. Back to upsetting the neighbours

Yes..the hinges are welded to the cars body.. but are bolted to the doors ( and than darned 'check rod' has a rivet going through it that is a complete bastard to remove ) door fit on SOME 1.5s is best described as 'sketchy'.. its quite time consuming job to get them to fit right it you happen to have a 'friday afternoon build' from the factory.. viva robot made cars for their consistent panel gaps..
