Quick question - the big MGB torque list (usually good for most things B-series) says 15lbs, but the Haynes manual for the One Point Five says 25. The BMC manual doesn't give a value. Any views? Thanks, John.

John, The factory Workshop Manual says 25lbs/ft - so I would go with that! Roger

I have found to not respect the factory setting for this particular application. The original studs are grade 5 and the nuts are double height brass ones. The clamping force is nicely addressed via the 'large' diameter washer between manifolds. My rule of thumb is to respect the SAE torque setting for UNC or UNF fasteners, grade 5 as most of the bolts & nuts are on these little cars. My torque setting for these simple non critical 5/16" fastener is mechanic tight. Also I find it too difficult to get a torque wrench into this spot anyway. B

I went with the 25 lbs but wished I hadn't because one of the nuts stripped. I have always done it by feel in the past. No problem getting the torque wrench in though, this is a 1965 car and the two end nuts are extended hexagons which according to the parts list was a later mod.

Bugger! As mentioned this 25 lb/ft seems tight and I have always used 'mechanic tight'.
Interesting comment on the outer manifold nuts. My 1959 Mk 1 has these tall nuts as well. (click to enlarge)
The rear nut uses the outer thread for a fastener to secure the tang of fire trap for the vacuum line. I have always wondered why the front nut was a tall one.

you can always do it 'factory' style.. tighten till tight.. and forget it.. BTW..front and rear nuts should be 'normal' nuts.. usually brass like the long ones.. but not always.. wise to use anti seize if using step buts and new lock washers on ALL the nuts when installing them..
