Can anyone confirm if the steering rack of our cars is the same as the Moggie Minor. One of the steering gators has perished and lost all of its oil. I want to replace it ASAP and I have a Minor centre close by that I could pop to which would save me having the car off the road pending delivery of bits etc? Thanks in advance

Hello Casper, That is a good question, and the answer I do not have. I can't imagine they are not however The only difference in the front end suspension of Riley versus the MM that I have encountered is the swivel pin has the steering lever drilled/installed on the top casting of the swivel pin versus the lower for the MM.
What I can say is the Illustrated Parts List has the rack as a 21G prefix part number, (21G6059) that is a Riley one-point-five specific part prefix. The steering rack seal/gaiter is also a 21G prefix part number, (21G 6028) so again Riley one-point-five specific. I really wish the current suppliers would use factory part numbers as reference.
I suggest to visit the MM center with the car and do a physical check. The criticals of course being each end of the gaiter diameter and overall length/number of bellows?
I did replace the gaiters on my Riley and procured them from the club spares department. This cut down the risk factor of an overseas purchase blunder. Note; these will come with plastic tie wrap instead of screw clamps. These tie wraps are easily fitted and work well.
Let us know what you come up.
Bruce

Casper, as ever, wise words from Bruce. A physical check would confirm. I'm very close to the Charles Ware Morris Minor Centre in Bristol so in need I could help out but I haven't got a gator to take with me for comparison purposes.

No ..its not the same steering rack as a morris minor (which incedentally shares the same rack as an opposite side steering Sprite/MG midget) the riley /wolseley rack has a different mounting set up to the minor... BUT..tie rods, tea rod ends and rack boots are the same as Morris Minor ..

for those not aware of the ongoing 'quality' issues with steering rack gators.. some of the current aftermarket replacement gaitors do not hold up for long.. the rubber compound disintegrates fast.. those for the 1.5 are a common size shared with many other cars.(situation MAY be different win UK but I suspect most of the parts come from same source..those sold here are mainly produceed in Asia.. . best bet is to try and source the alternative that come in a neoprene like compound.. these are darker on color and are visibly shiny on the surface.. I have new rack 'reproduction' rack for an MG midget on the shelf purchased about 2 yrs back, and its boots have already cracked and rotted... same issue with the front kingpin 'dust shields' for the 1.5 and M minor and MGA.. they crack and fall off.. often within 2 yrs of replacement.. originals held up far longer..repro gearshift gaiter has same issues as well..
