I have oil in one of the rear brake drums.
Should the oil seal behind the hub bearing prevent oil reaching this far? Or is it likely to be a simpler (DIY) task of replacing the ring oil seal and joint gasket behind the half shafts head?.....do you think?

It would be foolish not to replace both the Lip seal and the O ring and gasket as these items cost very little in comparison to a new set of brake shoes as once shoes are contaminated they cannot be cleaned successfully. NP

That is great advice thanks both.
I am not certain what the lip seal is though. Could you explain this to me please.

I would imagine that you do not have a Manual or a Parts book to reference hence your question? The lip seal is inside the hub casting behind the bearing so once you have removed the driveshaft where the 'O' ring and gasket are located you the need to remove the lock tab and the large retaining nut (beware left hand side left hand thread right hand side right hand thread) and pull off the hub pull or drift out the bearing and the lip seal will be found underneath (be aware the open end of the seal faces the differential)drift out the old seal and replace. Its all in section H2 of the workshop manual but I can't understand how enclose a picture on this forum otherwise I would have included that also. I am lucky enough to have a purpose build spanner to fit the nut and purchased a BMC puller many years ago these two items make the job easier but everything can be overcome with some lateral thinking. Sorry that I couldn't have been more help. NP

Many thanks again.
I do indeed have a manual but was not aware of the terminology to describe that seal.

So; Here is the snap to the associated bits in the rear hub, the seal in question is #39. Nigel explains very well how to address the renewal. In the absence of a suitable hub puller one can use the axle shaft, reversed with the dome of the axle end against the axle spline axle, using the wheel studs as the puller. I think I used barrel nuts and bolts for extra length? FWIW these are 3/8" UNF threads. Lousy sketch below; On the downloads page of this site, a member here scanned the workshop manual that has other details you may need to know. Support the car well and have fun. B PS: Often oil leaks due to the drum retaining screws, (#44) being AWOL and each time the road wheel is removed these O ring/gasket seal relax.

Really top service guys. I think I stand a good chance of pulling this job off now.
I am very grateful indeed.
