I fitted the fancy 'Vokes' type air filters - much better than standard and were used by the BMC works team! Avoid the thin pancake style ones - they are only just a bit better than fitting nothing! Roger

Hi, Moss sell them and so do Moto-Build in surrey. Alternatively just google MGA Vokes air filters and see what comes up. Warning though ... they aren't cheap - but well worth it for that period look. You can also fit uprated K&N filter papers inside them to give better filtration and air flow!

Roger, thank you. Didn’t realise MGA ones would fit a 1.5. I ‘ve always used K&N ones as they were the only ones I knew of and make a rasping noise!! Time for a change to Vokes and if good enough for BMX works team then good enough for me!!

Perceived confusion? and FWIW the Riley engine is pretty much a 1500 MGA power unit, carburetors and all.
The Vokes air cleaner assemblies that Roger and I are writing about is a brand name filter assembly of another era. This was used/fitted to the MGA. Simply as Mr. Google for images of MGA air cleaners to familiarize yourself.
I show a Vokes air cleaner base in my previous post with a K&N oiled/fabric air filter element. The original felt Vokes air cleaner element was not particularly good at doing its intended job. The solution that Roger and I suggest uses a correct size K&N filter element in the Vokes air cleaner top /bottom covers. Not 'bling' by any sense of the imagination but certainly looks period correct.
I wrote an article for the Riley Record some years ago explaining how to install these air cleaners to the Riley.
I am on travel for work right now but if you are interested I can send you this article for your perusal. Let me know.
salut
Bruce

I have the Vokes type filters but the stub stacks are not built in can you get these separate? NP Nigel, Apologies for my post not being clear. I wrote an article December 2011 for the Riley Record, titled 'Breathe Easy'. In this article I describe how I fitted and 'improved' the Vokes air cleaner on my car. If you can locate the edition it will be self explanatory. I modified/installed the 'stub stack' shown to improve the air flow into the carburetor choke. The 'stub stack' that I show is the air filter base from a MGB. This requires some machining to the back of the stub stack. There is a boss on the standoffs of the Vokes back plate and machining a clearance is required. (below) On the front carburetor Vokes filter can one also needs to 'remove' part of the breather tube on the inside in order to fit the filter element correctly. In order to have adequate height above the 'stub stack' for air flow I used the K & N element E-3213. I installed short rubber spacer, (cut off 5/16" hose) to make up the height of the Vokes standoffs and act as anti vibration washer for the fasteners. I didn't bother to use the outer mesh of the Vokes assembly. And yes there is some 'induction' sound to enjoy! salut Bruce

Thanks for the info on the stub stacks I however have had less luck in locating the offcut of trim I have been looking for but may have some other material much older and possibly more suited to your requirements I will keep you in the loop. Cheers NP
