Thanks Bruce. I have read quite a lot of the mgaguru info but missed that. Interesting that your 18G MGB engine backplate was not compatible with the Riley gearbox. That must be due to the differences between the MGB and Riley gearboxes and the MGA gearbox may be like one or the other or different to both! We shall see soon but, if necessary, I can use the Riley backplate. I am pretty sure the Riley and MGA both have the high starter. Once I get my engine back and the Riley one out of the car I will be sure to document the compatibility issues.

I now have my engine back from Chase who, I think, have done a great job. Also Econotune head by Peter Burgess. In my previous projects, especially the MR2, I have found other peoples' records really helpful so I will start another thread specifically for this engine swap.

Johnathan, Wow you don't mess about. I just visited the picture gallery you have posted, nicely done indeed. If I may? the pistons, (lovely flat top! ) have the markings in reverse? the FRONT is facing rear. Bruce

He said the shortage of these early engines means he can't find stocks of refurbishable parts.

When I visited Chase Engines the guy who was doing the reassembly, Mark, pointed that out to me. The pistons have the gudgeon pin slightly offset to one side and he noticed that the markings on all the pistons were incorrect! He said "something didn't feel right" which led him to check carefully. I am glad he spotted that, not sure I would!

Hi Bruce, well spotted. Yes I have fallen folly with this as well. Caught it in time thank goodness, how you ask? I read the workshop manual. The gudgeon pin is offset slightly to one side as a design feature, such that the fuel combustion rocks the piston and makes the cylinder wall opposite the camshaft the thrust surface for the piston skirt and cylinder wall. This is also why the oil squirt hole in the connecting rod should be oriented toward that side of the cylinder wall and not toward the camshaft. This squirt hole is shown in the workshop manual section AA, ( plate AA12) showing the oils channels etc. Pretty neat stuff to experience Keep up the good work. Bruce
