Simon, Nice to see that you are growing your tool collection ! That ball joint splitter is a godsend! and mine as well has a split pin!
I agree with your call on swapping out the fulcrum pin to accommodate the split pin/castle nut. I had not considered MR. MOT so this is double smart on your part!
Did you re use the neoprene seals for the wing install or buy new?
Carry on, #2 side will be a doddle.

The old neoprene seals came away in pieces so I bought a roll of neoprene which I thought was going to be self adhesive and wasn't. I cut notches for the holes and then used some spray adhesive to hold in in place while I put the wing back.
As an aside - the old 'one-point-five' script had been screwed in place but clearly it should have some sort of fixing inside the wing, at the pegs that pass through to the inside. I assume I use those round washery things with a zig-zag inner circle. Any idea what these ziggy-zaggy washer things are called - Mr Google is not helping?

Gentlemen - I fear we have mission creep.. I dismantled the nearside suspension on Friday (30 mins - you said it would be quicker) and today I started to scrape away the crud under the wing. I haven't taken the wing off because it looks fine. Then I found a lump of mud in the top rear corner of the wing - just below the corner of the windscreen. It was spongey and my gentle prodding with a screwdriver produced holes. I pulled at it by hand and discovered it was a mix of mud and wire wool. Fearing a bodged repair I took the wing off. This is what I found.. There was a spot weld at the leading edge of the wing as per the other side and it was suggested that this meant that the wing might not have been removed. Is wire-wool in this location normal?? It wasn't on the other side. In doing this I did find a big hole at the very bottom of the wing that will need to be sorted. This is what the side looks like now after a quick cleanup. Simon ps. Excuse the weird image hosting - Tinypic was offline

Simon, That 'mud & wire wool' resembles the dust excluder found in the bottom of the door cavities. I wonder if the PO had a rattle or and this is an attempt to silence it? I never found these bits on my car nor does this show up in the IPC, but I must admit it does look 'official'. I suggest the mud is just that, kicked up over the years of driving. I would remove it as it looks a to be a very good moisture trap. Good work on the suspension, and a little attention with a welder will see that wing right.

Simon, I found exactly the same when I took my wings off. I think it must be a standard fitting - but what for? some sort of sound deadening/excluder maybe? (my car had only 38k on the clock and I am sure had never had the wings off before) Roger

My car had never had the wings off prior to me owning it, and I never found these block of horse hair when I removed mine. As I mentioned earlier these do look official, so must have been there from the get go. My suspicion is as yours, some sort of sound/vibration attenuation device. With George, 137K miles perhaps over time these shake their way loose and fall away?

The item in question is called a pad scaler or sealer its in the parts book part number ALA 1962. Cooper, I found a part similar to this 'horsehair pad' in the door cavity. This is installed/glued above drain holes in the doors, 2 per. This part number ALA1962 I find in my parts list but I can not detail it. It is referenced in the R section under body parts. What quantity does the parts list call up?

Hi my parts book only lists 2 pads its listing them for the front wings only, the picture is poor but it looks like the pads fit at the top of the door post and wing area I removed them on my car due to the mud and road dirt the pads collect.

Work is still progressing. honest.. Was struck down with real flu last week and so work ground to a halt, but managed to get back out today and paint the inner wing and all the parts ready for re-assembly. (I have no idea why this is sideways) The wing is still with the paint shop - hopefully will get it back this week and I can get him back on his wheels. Simon
